Yoga for Respiratory Detox
There are a lot of working theories around what is the best way to detox our bodies. Some decide to go on a cleansing diet while some look to cardio and weight loss as a means to flush out toxins. Fact of the matter is there is no one size fits all measure. Each person has his own reasons for detoxing and accordingly must find his own way.
But there are a few proven ways in
Yoga that one can adopt to further along their detox process.
Pranayama is the Yoga of breathing.
This particular form of Yoga has been widely accepted as a means for cleansing
the nasal track and the respiratory organs. There are many factors that can
cause discomfort and ultimately congestion in our breathing patters and
Pranayama is the ultimate defense against all of them.
When practising Yoga it is pivotal to
get your breathing right first so I suggest learning Pranayama prior to moving
into more intricate and detailed asanas later on. Start with Kapalbhati,
wherein first you hold your posture in a seated position with your spine
upright and shoulders back. Thereafter you exhale in short bursts of air
creating a pumping action. Once you get the motion down, slowly increase your
speed.
Subsequently you can try what is
called Jal Neti. Jal Neti is a great exercise for flushing out all the mucus
and the debris inside your nasal tract. A Neti pot is recommended for the same
but you can still perform the kriya without it. Put a pinch of salt in some
lukewarm water and pull it through one nostril. Here you’d want to keep your
mouth open and let the water run out through it. This may seem uncomfortable at
first but it works wonders in preventing colds, avoiding and curing sinus
infections and helping you breathe and sleep better.
